Biologie macht Schule (biology at school)

The Faculty of Biology focuses on the training of pre-service teachers on a high scientific level and is further developing the relevance for teaching in the framework of the project "Biologie macht Schule" (biology at school). The project spans the whole training of pre-service teachers and thus provides a solid foundation for the teaching profession.

Courses with a strong practical relevance (-> e.g. pupil's labs) and the module "Übergang Universität - Schulische Praxis (transition from university to school practice)" form an integral part of the subject-specific and didactical teacher training. Material from basic courses and current results from biology research with relevance for school are available for download from the Internet. The concept becomes sustainable by giving in-service teachers the possibility to access special web offers and to return to university for individual courses with their class.

A central part of "Biologie macht Schule" is the offer of integrated pupils' labs for various biology subject areas. E.g. the seminar "Genetik macht Schule - Genetics in school" combines a seminar and practical lessons. Pre-service teachers develop units of instruction and teach them to an actual class of pupils. Afterwards they guide the class on a training day regarding this topic. The practical experience gained is reviewed in a seminar afterwards. In addition the teaching competence of the students is evaluated by the pupils and their teachers.

The web page for "Biologie macht Schule" (-> http://www.biologie.lmu.de/studium/lehrerbildung_lmu) enables a connection with the professional school field while still at university. Web-based materials for core courses in the subject area of biology are being updated during the course of the project and the connection of the content to the teaching curriculum is strengthened. The website offers students and in-service teachers information about projects with practical relevance.
